One question, “Can splitting food save you money?

According to the The News and Observer, Restaurants say they are seeing more and more customers, who are using the tactic of splitting large sized entrees, to slice their eating-out budget.

“People are splitting things like they never have before,” said David Pogrebin, general manager of French restaurant      Brasserie in New York, where a hamburger costs $18 and an entrée can rise above $30.”

“Pogrebin said he recently noticed three people sharing an iced tea, which comes with unlimited refills. The restaurant didn’t stop them.  Now all bets are off, he said. People are not ashamed of being frugal.”

One owner of a Raleigh barbecue restaurant says he’ll often have two people come in to split a $3 dollar, four wing appetizers and drink water.

A fellow blogger, who writes all about Stretching a Buck (this is the blogs name as well), said she and her husband typically eat out two or three times a week and frequently split an entrée or order two entrées and split them with their 3-year old daughter.

Did you know, “that some restaurants assess the fee if the chef splits the dinner into two before bringing it to the table. Some dishes aren’t easily split — meat on the bone, for example, can’t be cut exactly in half without one person receiving more fat or more bone.

According to Steve Adams, owner of the Peak City Grill in Apex, “At the restaurant, 10 to 15 percent of customers choose to split an entrée now, despite a $3 to $5 fee.  This option has not stopped more patrons from choosing it.

“For his customers, Adams said, it comes down to feeling as if they got a good value. He’s started offering more entrées under $17 and said he’s seeing an increase in the number of customers ordering a number of lower-priced dishes rather than one big entrée.”

Some people just like to believe they are getting a deal…. Are you one of those people who feel that way?

Will you be splitting your entree the next time you go out to eat???
