Though steaks are quick and easy to prepare, they are often the most expensive meats in the supermarket.  If your budget is stretched and you are looking for ays to stretch it then you would prefer to buy less expensive meats like poultry, beef, or pork.

Here are a few cuts that might just help you out in the low budget department.

Chicken legs: The demand for pricier skinless chicken breasts creates an oversupply of dark-meat chicken parts, notes the National Chicken Council on the Web site, eatchicken.com.

Chicken thighs: This is the dark meat of the chicken, full with rich flavor, lush texture, having only one bone-in, and easy-to-remove skin. This meat is much more versatile and cheaper than the breast.  Keep in mind for boneless thighs price will be higher.

Pork shoulder: This is the best cut for long, slow cooking because it contains fat throughout the muscles and lots of collagen for flavorful broths and gravies.  This meat is usually used in stews, barbecued pork, tacos, and sandwiches.

Pork butt (Boston butt): This is the top of the shoulder.  This meat can be stewed, made in a pot roast or pork kebabs.

Chuck roast: Chuck roast is tougher than many cuts.  To get this meat tender a longer cooking time is involved.

Tri-tip roast: This triangular-shaped boneless cut of beef comes from the bottom of the sirloin and is known for being flavorful and economical. It can be sold as a roast or cut into steaks.
