The Food and Drug Administration is claiming, that the infamous breakfast cereal, Cheerios, may be classified as a drug.

On May 5, the FDA sent a warning letter to General Mills, the maker of Cheerios, charging that the cereal’s cholesterol-lowering health claims violate federal law.

FDA stated:

“Based on claims made on your product’s label, we have determined that your Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug because the product is intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, if General Mills wishes to keep the statements on the Cheerios box as they are now, the company must file a new-drug application for the cereal.

In a statement issued by General Mills, they expressed that they will “look forward to discussing this with the FDA and to reaching a resolution.”

What do you think of packaged foods being allowed to make these decisions?

18 May 2009 In: Food Buzz

For those of you who are asking yourself what is a crespelle, let me tell you….. it is the Italian version for a Crepe.

In 2001, when Albert Di Meglio was about to become the executive chef at Osteria del Circo in Manhattan, the owner, Sirio Maccioni, asked him to travel through Tuscany first on an eating tour.  There he tasted a Monte Bianco, a dessert that begins with a tart shell, then a layer of airy chestnut mousse flecked with candied, crumbled chestnuts and a topping of whipped cream. He was also invited to visit Mr. Maccioni in Montecatini, where his wife, Egidiana Maccioni, made a crespelle, an Italian version of a crepe.

The crespelle was filled with ricotta, a bit of lemon zest, a twist of black pepper and Parmigiano-Reggiano. It was baked for 10 minutes, then topped with toasted pine nuts and brown butter. Read the rest of this entry »

British chef Jamie Oliver is teaming up with Ryan Seacrest’s production company and ABC network to debut a new television series, that will give “healthy makeovers” to an entire American city.

Oliver will travel to the unhealthiest places in America and find ways to use  nearby resources to improve local eating habits.

Jamie new series is inspired by his acclaimed school lunch project in the  U.K., where the chef set about to improve kids’ nutrition.

The idea for the series struck a nerve with radio host/TV producer Seacrest:

“Seacrest said he talked about school lunches during a segment on his  KISS FM morning radio show and was struck by the amount of  listener response. Then he heard Oliver was looking to bring his  public service campaign stateside. The resulting ABC show will not  only tackle a city’s schools, but workplaces and other avenues for  change.”

The network has ordered six  hours of the project from Ryan Seacrest  Productions, and is expected to air in  2010.

Are you looking forward for the new Brit’s tv series?  I am!
