Using chopsticks is not nearly as difficult as some people might think. With a few pointers and a little practice anyone can learn to use them.
I think one mistake that many make is that many individuals are too concerned with having perfect form decide not to attempt to use them at all. Another mistake is that they some people go out and buy the nicest pair of chopsticks they can find to learn with. Usually though the nicer the chopsticks, the harder they are to use. Your best bet is to go out and buy a really cheap wooden bamboo set, these are the easiest ones to learn how to pick food up with.
When you have mastered wooden chopsticks, then you can upgrade to ceramic, plastic, or metal ones. Make sure to keep in mind thats the shorter the chopsticks the easier they are to use.
Follow these Instructions:
Step 1: Hold one chopstick between your thumb and middle finger. Position the chopstick so that it lies at the base of your thumb (on the joint) and at the lower joint of the middle finger. This chopstick shouldn’t touch the forefinger.
Step 2: Place the other chopstick between your thumb and forefinger. The side of the chopstick should rest against the tip of your thumb; the top of the chopstick should rest against the pad of your forefinger.
Step 3: Be sure the tips of the chopsticks are parallel.
Step 4: Keep the first chopstick stationary as you practice moving the second chopstick toward the stationary one.
Step 5: Use this technique to position the chopsticks around a piece
Step 6: Hold the food firmly as you lift it toward your mouth.
