Fever!
Headache!
Sweating!
Coughing!
Body Pains!
Sore Throat!
Chills!
All symptoms of a wicked thing we call the Flu. The Flu is striking with a vengeance this season, attacking men, women, and children. After speaking to my mother, a few days ago she complained of having a few of these wretched symptoms but over the past few days they became exceedingly worse. I asked her the most common question, when one is told that they are sick
“Well, have you taken anything and if so, What?”
So, I decided then to brwose and see what I can tell her to take because hearing your strong independant mother sound as if she was dying was not a great thing.
I came a cross this recipe for Bourbon Cough Syrup, for adults only, on thekitchn. Its a pretty simple recipe all needed is bourbon whiskey, honey, lemon and water. Thats all guys, not rocket science people. 😉
If you have been bitten with this awful flu definitely try this little concoction and let me know how you feel after… 🙂
Bourbon Cough Syrup for Grownups
2 ounces bourbon whisky
1/2 lemon, juiced (about 2 ounces)
2-4 ounces water (optional)
1 tablespoon honey
Mix the bourbon, lemon juice, and water (if using) in a tumbler or mug and heat in the microwave for about 45 seconds. (You can also do this on the stovetop in a little saucepan.) Take out and add the honey. Whisk to combine, then microwave for another 45 seconds.
If you’re sick, it’s best not to drink this too hot; a good warm temperature is better. Take it to bed and nurse it slowly with a book in the other hand.
Sleep well!

My mom, who was a nurse, use to give this to me when I was younger, and I loved it! Would help me sleep and help my cough. As a parent, you will have to decide if you will add the whiskey, but it never hurt me and I didn’t grow up to be an alcoholic or anything!

I’m actually nursing one of these right now in hopes I don’t get a sore throat for work tomorrow, and I have to say that it’s working. I had to adjust the recipe accordingly due to my lack of lemons and the having of crystallized lemon packets, but the effect is the same. Might have overdone it on the lemon, though. Oh well.

I have used this recipe for years, and thought it was a secret family recipe! LOL My mom and grandma used this, but used orange juice instead of lemon- its so yummy and warms your soul! AND makes that nasty cough subside long enough to fall asleep! I definitely suggest using orange juice instead of lemon.

My mother always had a fruit jar of this sitting on the dresser at the top of the stairs when we were kids, that is until she discovered it was slowly dissappearing…lol…I loved the stuff and was snitching it after we were tucked in for the night. I recommend it for all ages…I didn’t grow up to become an alcoholic, but I will say I still like the taste of bourbon…

This recipe from Makers Mark has worked for my “singers throat” for years. Always coats the throat with honey, lemon and of course Makers . A sure thing every time.

I’ve been fighting flu like symptoms for several days. If I cough too much more I’ll explode.
I mixed up a batch using ice instead of water to make it cold. This beats cough drops and soothes the throat better. That warm fuzzy bourbon feel doesn’t hurt either.
I had a slight fever and a couple of aspirin helps for that.
Feelin’ better already.
